With a menacing 4.5" dagger blade and comfortably large, impact-capable handle, the Gerber Applegate-Fairbairn Combat Folder is a mean blade. Few folding tactical blades match its reach and penetration capabilities at this weight and price range. Downsides would be the goofy mystery steel (425 M) that Gerber forces upon us and the pivot-mounted, non-switchable pocket clip. But the rest is outstanding: fast deployment, solid lockup, strong and fold proof Interlock locking system, blackened SS clip that's stout and contoured to handle, and a useful sheath. While a dedicated thrust cutter (dagger) design, the Gerber Combat Folder could also serve in some limited utility tasks as well. But it's main function is to provide you with a deadly backup weapon. And, like mine, it can be made even more effective in this calling by some expert sharpening of the upper edge which is fully protected within the handle. This is another highly recommended folding knife for deploying, combat-engaged Allied troops. Despite the funky steel, I give the Combat Folder a 9 of 10 likability rating.

Design within reach is at it again with their annual Champagne Chair Contest . This year the requirements have changed a bit though. You still need to create an original miniature chair using only the foil, label, cage and cork from no more than two champagne bottles. This year though, to cut down on packaging waste, submissions should be made digitally or with pics of your entry via snail mail. Prizes are in the form of DWR Gift Cards. All entries must be received, via email, by 5pm (PT) on Monday, January 7, 2008. No additional materials!! and the chair must be at most 4"x4"x4" in size. Thankfully this year the chair must be an original Design ? no more miniature replicas considered. I thought that should have been a no brainer in previous years! ...
